Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script
Somebody has already picked which story is worth the bet before anyone calls « action » on a short drama set. Tracking a few hits backward often uncovers a book at the start of the process. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout is the source of ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance reelshortmovies.net/series/kidnapped-by-the-mafia built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, comes from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon are the basis of Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Source material sits close at hand since several app owners also operate reading businesses: Holywater runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Lacking a book, writers fall back on well-worn tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script’s job is to boil down a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Casting Known Faces
On screen, the format’s economics show up through casting. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley fronted ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were led by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. When a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it matters a great deal that a lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a particular viewer in mind.
Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days
Going by TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per series. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is much the same, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. When a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic comes to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Slimmer numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture pegging a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou said it had made for overseas markets, and original overseas productions made up 20 percent. The pricey shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series.
Stage Four: Slicing to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. An episode has room for a turn or two of plot at that length, so each one is built around a question which the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, serving as the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Added up, the slivers of a 70-episode series add up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. Since ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls
The last creative decision is a commercial one as well. Free viewing covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap outlines. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, going by its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Coins unlock the episodes that follow, and ReelShort’s blog says the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. The same blog says one ad unlocks two premium episodes, so watching ads is another way to earn coins; another option is a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. The price in your store may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. It is best to avoid coin generators and modded « unlimited coins » apps that promise a way around the wall, because they are unofficial.
Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation
In the newest production stage, there is no camera at all. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as « Johnny » and eventually unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. This title should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reports that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it « AI slop ».
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line
The clearest example of traditional studios taking notice is Fox Entertainment. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. When a network-scale producer signs up to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line

Set side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. The edit is built around cliffhangers that lead into a paywall, casting relies on known faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who search for a « reel short drama » usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. If no reliable figure has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Stage of production | Typical time and cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and script | No public number | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No public figure | Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot in a vertical frame |
| Edit | Episodes running 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animation | Costs undisclosed | Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI |
| Studio co-production | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio creates vertical series for an app |
